Title: Senior Program Instructors – Aquatics
Reports to: Program Coordinators
Status: Full-time, 35 hours per week
Location: Variety Village, Scarborough, ON

Summary:
Variety Village is currently seeking full-time Senior Aquatic Instructors for our programs and facility supervision. The instructor will assist the coordinators in providing support to the swim-instructors by overseeing and assisting them while they are instructing. They will also be provided with opportunities to educate, strengthen, and grow the in-water programs offered in the facility as well as the overall aquatics team.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Ensuring that the facility is following policies, expectations and guidelines for the following:
- Facilitating active programming, to promote inclusion and well-being.
- Ensuring a safe and stimulating environment for program participants.
- Promoting active living opportunities and participation for people with disabilities.
- Understanding and following emergency protocols, procedures, and policies established by Variety Village.
- Responding and providing treatment to emergencies as required.
- Actively working in and/or supervising various parts of the facility.
- Overseeing the part-time staff as needed by the following:
- Assisting in finding coverage if/as needed.
- Supporting and coaching the staff if/as needed.
- Ensuring that all administrative duties of the part-time staff are completed during the session.
- Ensuring that all staff hold qualifications and are currently valid to work.
- Assisting with equipment maintenance and inventory by:
- Regularly checking and ensuring equipment is in working order.
- Completing monthly pool inspections, equipment inspections, etc.
- Maintaining administration tasks for program and facility records.
- Completing administrative duties as required.
- Coaching, evaluating and reporting staff to Coordinators if/as necessary.
- Attending and participating in staff meetings and training as required by the facility, including seasonal staff in-service.
- Includes demonstrating mandatory NL physicals and related skills.
- Handling other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Recreation / Leisure, Sports Administration, Physical Education a strong asset.
- Current and valid National Lifeguard – Pool, Swim Instructor and Standard First Aid with CPR-C Certifications.
- Airway management, Lifesaving and First Aid Instructor Certification, and/or Crisis Prevention & Intervention training a strong asset.
- Minimum of two years working in aquatic programming as a swim instructor and lifeguard.
- Minimum of one year working in community and recreation programming.
- Excellent leadership, communication and organizational skills.
- Strong customer service and public communication.
- Dependable, reliable and punctual.
- Able to adapt activities and programming for people with disabilities.
- Must have strong decision-making, problem-solving skills.
- Able to work independently as an effective employee.
- Able to take and follow directions given by supervisors on items needing to be completed for programming.
- Participating in company training that includes Health & Safety, AODA, CPI and Plan to Protect.
- Participating in Variety’s Orientation program and adhere to established organizational policies and protocols.
