Job Description

The Township of Rideau Lakes is seeking a Swimming Instructor/Lifeguard position on a seasonal contract from July 3rd to August 29th, 2025, at Sand Lake Park and Westport Lions Club Beach.

The regular hours for this position are 32.5 hours/week from Monday to Friday, 8:30AM to 3:30PM. The hourly wage rate is Band 1 Step 4 ($24.83/hour).

Summary: Develop and teach swimming lessons for various age groups under the direction of the Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator. Ensure proper documentation for recreational programming. Work with minimal supervision and provide high levels of customer service in all duties performed.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide swimming instruction, skill evaluation, and safety supervision of participants, accident prevention, rescue skills and public relations.

• Plan, conduct, and implement safe and educational swimming lessons.

• Ensure proper equipment is in place and operational and stored away after use.

• Ensure compliance with Ontario Health Regulations and Township Policy and Procedures.

• Perform tasks to support the program including report cards and worksheets.

• Instructors are always responsible for class safety. They must be continually aware of actual or potential dangers and practice preventative lifeguarding, including accident and incident prevention i.e., behavioral concerns, potential accidents, or collisions.

• Works as part of a team and ensures good communication.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be 16 years of age.
  • Valid Standard First Aid with CPR (Level C) from a WSIB approved agency.
  • Current Lifesaving Society's National Lifeguard-Pool OR current Lifesaving Society's National Lifeguard-Waterfront
  • Current Lifesaving Society's Swim Instructor
  • Satisfactory police check with vulnerable sector check (if 18 years or older)
  • A valid Class “G2” driver’s license or higher with reliable transportation
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work without supervision, be observant and attentive to detail.
  • Must be highly motivated to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Must be courteous and tactful in dealing with coworkers and the public.
  • Able to evaluate water conditions for dangers or hazards and adjust lessons accordingly.
