Job Description

The Lifesaving Society is a national volunteer organization and registered charity. We are a full-service provider of programs, products and services designed to prevent drowning. We save lives and prevent water‐related injury through our training programs, Water Smart public education, drowning research, aquatic safety management and lifesaving sport.

The Lifesaving Society Ontario Branch invites applications for the volunteer position Public Education Indigenous Outreach Chair.

Purpose: To provide leadership for the Lifesaving Society – Ontario in disseminating public education messages to the Indigenous Community.

Term of Office: Appointed by the Board of Directors to the Public Education Council for a term of two years.

Reporting Relationship:

  • To the Lifesaving Public Education Council as scheduled.
  • To the Board of Directors as required.

Required Qualifications

Responsibilities:

1. Establish objectives and annual action plan on matters related to Public Education –Indigenous Outreach.

2. Manage approved projects related to Indigenous Outreach, including:

  • Direct the distribution of relevant materials developed by the Lifesaving Society.
  • Identify needs/opportunities for Lifesaving Society activities, events, and participation within the Indigenous Community.
  • Identify potential funding sources and partner organizations (e.g. Canadian Rangers, Right to Play, etc.).
  • Collect and monitor activities of other provincial branches of the Lifesaving Society in Indigenous communities (especially AB, MB, BC).
  • Monitor activities of other NGOs (especially water safety/injury prevention) in Ontario Indigenous communities (e.g. Safe Kids, Res Cross, SmartRisk, etc.).
  • Collect experiences of Lifesaving Society volunteers who have spent time in Indigenous communities.

3. Chair the Indigenous Outreach committee, including:

  • Recruit and develop committee members as required
  • Assign responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate committee activities
  • Recognize volunteer committee members

4. Attend a minimum of two Public Education Council meetings per year, and the Annual General Meeting.

5. Report to Public Education Council as scheduled on the status of established objectives and action plan.

6. Prepare an annual report on Indigenous Outreach committee activities and accomplishments.
