  You can become a Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor
when you’ve earned your Bronze Cross and are at least 14 years of age. When
you are 16 you take Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Instructor certifications.
Check out the requirements to become a
specialized program instructor (e.g., National Lifeguard, First Aid,
BOAT, AED).
All instructors must
recertify every two years to remain current.
Assistant Instructor
The Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor Course prepares
candidates to help certified instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes.
Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching, and they
master basic progressions. The Assistant Instructor course emphasizes the roles
and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants.
Prerequisites: 14 years of age; current Bronze
Cross (or higher) certification.
Course length: approximately 15-18 hours classroom
and water time.
Reference materials required: Canadian Lifesaving Manual.
Costs: In addition to the required reference materials, a certification fee is payable to the Lifesaving Society. Course organizers will charge a fee to cover the costs of running the course.
Swim Instructor
The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Course focuses on
preparing the instructor to teach and evaluate basic swim strokes and related
skills. Swim Instructor candidates acquire proven teaching methods and a variety
of stroke development drills and correction techniques. Swim Instructors are
certified to teach and evaluate all levels of the Lifesaving Society Swim Program:
Parent & Tot, Preschool, Swimmer, and Adult Swimmer
Prerequisites: 16 years of age; current Bronze
Cross (or higher) certification.
Course length: approximately 20 hours classroom
and water time (often 40 hours when combined with the Lifesaving Instructor
course).
Reference materials required: Canadian
Lifesaving Manual and Swim Instructor Pac.
Costs: In addition to the required reference
materials, a certification fee is payable to the Lifesaving Society. Course
organizers will charge a fee to cover the costs of running the course.
Lifesaving Instructor
The Lifesaving Instructor Course prepares instructors to
teach the Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze medal awards, and Emergency First Aid.
Lifesaving Instructors may evaluate and certify candidates in the Swim Patrol,
Bronze Star, Emergency First Aid, and Lifesaving Fitness Awards.
Prerequisites: 16 years of age; current Bronze
Cross (or higher) certification.
Course length: approximately 20 hours classroom
and water time (often 40 hours when combined with the Lifesaving Society Swim
Instructor Course or the instructor courses of other agencies).
